A deconstruction of expertise through arcade games
Across countless domains and tasks there are people who perform at exceptional levels, such as with video games and musical instruments. The underlying mechanisms behind developing an expertise, however, are still not fully understood. We use two novel video games developed for this project named Space Progress and Brick Bandit and compare three distinctly different groups: (1) adults with experience in video games, (2) adults with experience playing musical instruments, but no experience with video games, and (3) a control group with no experience with either computer games or musical instruments.
